Birth certificate in Georgia
Birth certificate in Georgia. A practical guide to birth registration, required documents, processing time and the birth certificate fee in Georgia.

Birth is a legally significant fact subject to mandatory registration in Georgia. When a child is born in a Georgian medical institution, the institution sends an electronic notice to the Public Service Development Agency.
How much does a birth certificate cost?
The initial birth certificate is issued free of charge — the fee is GEL 0. Registration should be completed no later than the next working day after the required documents are submitted.
Who may apply?
An application may be filed by either parent, an authorised representative, or another authority specifically authorised by law. Required documents depend on the parents’ marital circumstances.

Foreign documents
Unless an exception applies, documents issued abroad must be apostilled or legalised and accompanied by a notarised translation.
How to prepare the application
First establish whether the birth has already been registered. A hospital sending information and a certificate being handed to you are different stages. Tell the agency whether you need initial registration, replacement of a lost certificate or correction of an existing record.
Compare the spelling of parents’ names across the documents. If a foreign passport, marriage record and translation use different spellings, show the discrepancy to the service officer before submission. Keep a list of documents accepted and any additional documents requested.
Using the certificate abroad
Identify the country and institution that will receive the certificate. Ask that institution about apostille, legalisation, translation and document-age requirements. Confirm the translation language before paying for it. Research the child’s passport and citizenship procedures separately from birth registration.
If information is wrong or the application stalls
Identify the exact issue: a name, date, parent’s details or spelling from a foreign document. Do not alter the certificate yourself. Retain copies of submissions, the application number and the response. Repeating an application without understanding the refusal may not resolve it. A written answer helps distinguish missing evidence, a record correction and a challenge to the decision.

We need a birth document
Initial registration, a replacement certificate and a document for use abroad are distinct services. Identify which you need before checking database records and translation requirements.
